Freedom Riding: Ride Your Own Adventure

One of the things that makes Wild Roads Motorcycle Tours different is our approach to group riding.

We don’t believe in rigid “follow the leader” touring where everyone rides nose-to-tail all day long. While we often start each morning together as a group while everyone warms up, settles into the day, and gets comfortable with the roads, our philosophy is based around what we call Freedom Riding.

What Is Freedom Riding?

Quite simply, it means you’re free to ride your own ride.

Want to take things a little slower and enjoy the scenery? No problem.

Fancy stopping for a quick photo opportunity, a coffee, or a comfort break? Go for it.

Prefer to ride a little more briskly through the twisty sections and get ahead of the group? That’s absolutely fine too.

Over years of running motorcycle tours, we’ve found that riders naturally separate throughout the day anyway. Different riding styles, different bikes, traffic lights, overtaking opportunities, fuel stops, roadworks, and individual preferences all mean that a group rarely stays together for long.

Rather than fighting against this natural flow, we’ve embraced it.

How It Works

At the beginning of each day, Joshua provides the day’s route along with a series of carefully selected waypoints.

These typically include:

  • Coffee stops
  • Fuel stops
  • Lunch stops
  • Scenic viewpoints
  • Points of interest
  • Regroup locations
  • Hotel destinations

These aren’t random locations. Every waypoint has been chosen based on Joshua’s own travels and experience riding the route, helping ensure you experience the very best roads, views, cafés, and hidden gems along the way.

Each morning, over breakfast, Joshua will talk through the day’s route, key stops, points of interest, and any important information for the day ahead.

Regular Regroup Points

The route is normally broken into sections of around 1–2 hours between stops.

This creates a relaxed pace to the day while also providing natural regroup locations.

Even if riders become separated throughout the day, everyone knows exactly where the next meeting point is.

This removes the stress of trying to keep up with the group and allows riders to focus on what they came for — enjoying the ride.

Ride With The Guide… Or Don’t

If you’d like to ride with Joshua for the entire day, you’re more than welcome to do so.

Many riders choose to ride with the guide for large sections of the tour, particularly during the first few days.

Others naturally form small riding pods with riders of a similar pace and style.

Some prefer riding independently for certain sections before meeting everyone again at the next stop.

There is no right or wrong way.

That’s the beauty of Freedom Riding.

A More Relaxed Touring Experience

The biggest benefit of Freedom Riding is that it creates a more relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere for everyone.

Nobody feels pressured to ride faster than they’re comfortable with.

Nobody feels held back if they prefer a slightly quicker pace.

Nobody worries about getting separated from the group because everyone knows where they’re heading next.

The result is a touring experience that feels more like an adventure among friends than a tightly controlled group ride.
