Wild Roads Destinations — New Zealand
The road to Aotearoa — Mount Cook over turquoise water, glacier highways, fiord-country switchbacks and some of the emptiest, most cinematic roads on earth. Motorcycle tours in New Zealand through the world's greatest natural playground.
Our motorcycle tours in New Zealand take you the length of the country: seventeen days across both islands, from the beaches of the Coromandel through geothermal valleys and rainforest passes to the fiords of the deep south.
New Zealand rides on the left, the roads are immaculately surfaced, and there's a viewpoint stop roughly every twenty minutes. A motorcycle tour of New Zealand with Wild Roads is a fully supported Trailblazer expedition — rental bikes sorted, stays booked, routes planned. You just ride, eat brilliantly and help discover the finished tour.
A 17-day, two-island expedition from Auckland or Wellington to Milford Sound: the Coromandel's beaches, Rotorua's geothermal valleys, the Cook Strait ferry, Kaikōura's coast, Arthur's Pass, the Franz Josef glacier road and the Haast Pass, finishing among the fiords of the deep south. Rental bikes, scouted routes, hand-picked stays and full support included — and your ride helps shape the finished Wild Roads New Zealand tour. £2,000 deposit; departing November 2027.
Road to Aotearoa is one of our first-run Trailblazer Expeditions — scouting tours to the world's great riding regions, alongside Hidden Japan and the Wild Arctic Odyssey.
See The Trailblazer Expeditions →New Zealand packs alpine passes, rainforest highways and coastal sweeps into two islands, and there's almost no traffic on any of it. The Crown Range's hairpins above Queenstown, the Haast Pass through UNESCO rainforest, the long empty straights of Canterbury — every day is a highlight reel, and every corner is surfaced like a racetrack.
We sleep in the places the brochures miss: lakeside lodges under the Southern Alps, characterful town pubs, boutique stays in old gold-rush villages. Every night is part of the ride, not just a bed at the end of it — and November's long evenings give you daylight to enjoy them.
World-class coffee in every one-horse town, legendary pies at rural petrol stations, fresh crayfish on the Kaikōura coast and Central Otago pinot noir after a day in the mountains. New Zealand café culture is made for riders — fuel, food and flat whites wherever you stop.
Geothermal valleys steaming beside the road, glaciers a corner away from rainforest, fiords at the end of a 120-kilometre mountain dead-end, and turquoise lakes so bright they look edited. It's the most cinematic country on earth to ride through — November adds snow on the peaks and spring colour in the valleys.
Yes — our New Zealand ride is Road to Aotearoa: a 17-day, two-island motorcycle tour of New Zealand running in November 2027 as a Wild Roads Trailblazer expedition, led by Josh with rental bikes, routes, stays and logistics all handled for you.
Trailblazers are first-run scouting tours — you come along on the research expedition that creates the finished Wild Roads tour. Some roads will be incredible, some won't (yet). That's the point: you ride the New Zealand most visitors never meet, and your feedback directly shapes the tour that follows. Everything is still fully supported and led by Josh.
Road to Aotearoa runs from £5,600 per rider, with a £2,000 deposit securing your place on the November 2027 departure. That covers 16 nights in hand-picked accommodation, scouted routes and daily planning, rental bike logistics and full support throughout. International flights are booked separately.
No need — your own bike stays home. Rental bikes are matched to the route and collected on arrival, so there's no shipping and no customs paperwork. Everything about the rental logistics is sorted by us before you land.
Your UK licence plus an International Driving Permit — the Post Office issues these over the counter. We walk the whole group through the paperwork well before departure so there are no surprises at the rental desk.
New Zealand rides on the left — good news for UK riders, as everything feels natural within an hour of collecting the bike. Roads are well maintained, traffic is light outside the cities, and the scenery stops you reaching for the camera every twenty minutes.
November — late spring in the Southern Hemisphere. That's exactly when we ride: snow still on the Southern Alps, turquoise lakes at full tilt, lambs in the paddocks and long daylight hours. It's the country at its freshest before the summer crowds arrive.
Launching from Auckland or Wellington — the final start city is being confirmed. The route runs top to bottom across both islands, from the Coromandel's beaches to Milford Sound, with the Cook Strait ferry crossing in between. Registered riders are notified the moment the start city is locked.
It's one of the finest riding countries on earth. The Crown Range's switchbacks, the Haast Pass rainforest, Kaikōura's coastal road and the climb into Milford Sound are world-class — and every road comes wrapped in mountain, lake or ocean views. Add empty roads, friendly locals and brilliant café stops, and it's a bucket-list destination.
Absolutely — solo riders make up most Wild Roads groups. On an expedition you're part of a small crew of 8–10 riders discovering the route together, with group dinners every evening and a lead guide handling everything. It's adventure with a ready-made crew.
Road to Aotearoa is a fully supported Trailblazer expedition — rental bikes, routes, stays and logistics all handled. You just get on the plane. Tell me where you want to ride and I'll build the plan.
