Join Joshua on a Trailblazer Expedition into the lesser-known side of Japan. Together, we’ll leave the familiar tourist routes behind to uncover winding mountain roads, forgotten villages, ancient temples, hidden restaurants and spectacular landscapes. Ride through places few travellers ever see, experience Japan beyond the obvious, and help discover the roads that could become a future Wild Roads adventure.
Some roads will be incredible. Some won’t. Some hotels will become firm favourites. Some restaurants will become stories we tell for years. That’s the point — you’re coming along on the research expedition that creates the tour.
Hidden Japan is a Trailblazer Expedition 2027: a genuine, first-run research adventure. Rather than following a route that has been ridden a hundred times, you’ll be there while it’s being discovered — testing roads, sampling regional food, staying in characterful ryokans and working out what deserves to make the final Wild Roads Japan itinerary.
If we get it right, you’ll have helped discover somewhere extraordinary before everyone else — and your feedback directly shapes the finished tour that follows.
The launch city is still being pinned down — most likely Tokyo, possibly Osaka — and either makes a brilliant stage one. Collect the bikes, shake off the flight, and dive straight into the neon, the noise and the best post-ride food on the planet.
Wherever the flag drops, the plan is the same: a proper first-night dinner, the expedition briefing, and an early escape into the mountains the next morning.
From the launch city the route heads straight for the good stuff: the Fuji Five Lakes and Hakone’s forest switchbacks — hot-spring towns, torii gates in the trees and Mount Fuji towering over the bends whenever the cloud allows.
It’s one of the great riding days anywhere in the world — and it’s only day three.
The heart of the expedition: the Japanese Alps. From temple-town Nagano — snow monkeys and 1,400-year-old shrines — the route climbs into preserved post towns like Narai-juku, where the wooden Edo-period streets haven’t changed in centuries, and on to Takayama, the gastronomic soul of the mountains.
The leg finishes in style: Kanazawa’s samurai and geisha districts, gold leaf and one of Japan’s great gardens, then the back lanes and bamboo groves on the way to Kyoto — a thousand years of Japan in one city.
Turning west, Osaka’s street-food energy — the self-styled kitchen of Japan — gives way to the calm of the Seto Inland Sea: island-hopping coast roads, sea-view bends and the floating torii of Miyajima outside Hiroshima.
The expedition finishes in Fukuoka, Kyushu’s outgoing capital of yatai food stalls and canal-side neon — the perfect full-circle ending to fourteen days of discovering a Japan most visitors never meet.
Every morning starts properly fuelled — from launch-city ramen joints to mountain ryokan breakfasts that deserve an early alarm.
Scouted and slept in first on the Trailblazer run — traditional ryokans, mountain hotels and characterful townhouses along the route.
Rental logistics are sorted by us — the right bike for the route, collected on arrival. Airport pickups and transfers are all handled.

Wild Roads isn’t run by a call centre — it’s run by me. I scout every route myself, ride at the front of every group, and I’m there when anything goes sideways, from a flat tyre to a missed ferry. Groups stay small on purpose: eight to ten riders, stays I’ve slept in myself, and roads I’d happily ride again tomorrow.
Japan is the furthest I’ve ever plotted a route from home — and the one I’ve wanted to ride most. This Trailblazer run is me going to find the real thing: the passes, the post towns, the roadside food stops that never make the guidebooks. Come and help me discover it.
The most likely launch pad — collect the bikes, shake off the flight and dive into the neon. If the final call lands on Osaka instead, the expedition simply starts there; registered riders hear it first.

Trailblazer Expeditions are first-run Wild Roads adventures to destinations we’ve scouted and ridden ourselves but never run as a tour before. You ride with Joshua on a true discovery expedition — the journey itself is the adventure, and your feedback helps shape the route for future riders.
£5,600 per rider, with a £2,000 deposit securing your place. There are two departures in October 2027 — 3–17 October and 17–31 October — both bookable through the Adventure Booking Hub.
No — rental bike logistics are sorted by us. You’ll be matched with the right bike for the route and collect it on arrival in Japan. Airport pickups and transfers are all handled as part of the expedition.
The launch city is still being confirmed — most likely Tokyo, possibly Osaka. Both are major international hubs with easy arrivals, and airport pickups and bike collection are handled either way. Registered riders are notified the moment the start city is locked.
You’ll need your UK licence plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention — available over the counter at the Post Office. We’ll walk you through exactly what’s required, along with visa and air-travel advice, as part of the trip.
Immaculate tarmac, polite traffic and some of the best mountain roads on earth. Expect tight switchbacks through forested passes, ridge lines above clouds, coastal roads over turquoise water and long, empty stretches through rural valleys. October brings mild weather and spectacular autumn colour.
Like all Wild Roads expeditions, this is a small, personal group — typically 8–10 riders, guided by Joshua himself. Trailblazer groups are intentionally kept small so we can explore freely, adapt plans and enjoy the destination without the restrictions of a large group.
