Introduction: The Homeward Reflection

There is a distinct, introspective quality to the penultimate day of a two-week European motorcycle expedition. By Day 14 of our ‘Twisties & The Tuscan Sun’ tour, the intense adrenaline of Alpine switchbacks and Tuscan hillsides naturally evolves into a richer, deeply satisfying rhythm. We woke up on Rue de Valverset in the heart of northern Burgundy, where early morning light filtered softly through green leaves and a faint mist hung over the quiet lane.

As fresh espresso brewed, riders gathered around the motorcycles with mugs in hand. Panniers were locked into place, visors wiped down, and tire pressures checked. There was no rush—just the comfortable camaraderie of a group that had spent two weeks riding together across four countries. Ahead lay 215 miles of French départementale roads, cutting north through the golden fields of Aube and Marne, past the sunlit vineyards of Champagne, toward Domaine de Barive in Sainte-Preuve.

For me, as tour leader, Day 14 is all about savoring every mile. We were no longer chasing tight mountain passes; instead, we were flowing through open French countryside on smooth asphalt, letting the engines hum while reflecting on an unforgettable fortnight in the saddle.

Today’s Route: From Burgundy to Picardy

Our journey today took us north-northwest through some of the finest rural riding terrain in northern France. Leaving 1, Rue de Valverset, we bypassed busy autoroutes entirely, choosing instead the flow and charm of France’s famed D-roads. These routes are a motorcycle tourer’s dream—impeccably maintained tarmac, gentle sweeping bends, minimal traffic, and vistas stretching to poplars on distant horizons.

The route initially took us through upper Burgundy before crossing into the southern Champagne region near Troyes. From there, we pushed north toward Épernay and Reims, riding along historic wine-growing slopes where green vines carpeted limestone hillsides. The contrast between the dramatic Alpine peaks earlier in the tour and these sprawling, serene agricultural landscapes was striking and welcome.

After a leisurely lunch in a quiet village square under the shade of plane trees, we navigated the peaceful backroads of the Aisne department. The final leg led us through dense forest groves until the grand gates of Domaine de Barive appeared in Sainte-Preuve—a sanctuary of luxury nestled in pristine countryside.

The Ride: Morning Coffee and Sweeping French D-Roads

The morning started with fresh coffee and laughter. At 08:28 AM at Rue de Valverset, the engines flared to life—a symphony of boxer twins, inline-fours, and triples echoing off stone walls. The temperature was an agreeable 18°C as we rolled out onto empty tarmac, the morning sun warm as we pointed our front wheels northward.

Within minutes, we were immersed in classic rural France. The road unfurled in long, rhythmic curves through vast expanses of golden wheat and sunflower fields. Riding in our trusted staggered formation, the group settled into an effortless pace. The rhythm of French country riding is addictive: roll on the throttle out of a village, lean smoothly into a sweeping radius curve, and cross a stone bridge into the next hamlet.

By mid-morning near Troyes, the sky was an unbroken canopy of summer blue, and the warm breeze carried the scent of freshly harvested hay. We pulled into a local boulangerie for croissants and espresso, enjoying a simple, unscripted moment that makes European touring so rewarding—no traffic to fight, just good friends and open roads.

Rider Experiences: Reflections from the Saddle

One of the true joys of leading a Wild Roads tour is observing how the group evolves over two weeks. On Day 1, riders are hyper-focused on route navigation, bike handling, and settling in. By Day 14, everyone rides as a single unit. Distances between bikes are maintained with instinctive precision, lane positioning is flawless, and conversation over the comms flows smoothly.

During lunch in Champagne country, Mark, riding his BMW R1250GS, remarked on his progress. “On the St Gotthard Pass in Switzerland, my arms were tight and I was overthinking every corner,” he said. “Today on these French sweepers, I feel completely relaxed. The bike just leans and flows.”

David and Sarah, riding two-up on their Ducati Multistrada, agreed. “Touring Europe on a bike gives you a perspective you can’t get any other way,” Sarah noted. “You feel the temperature drop in the forests, smell the vineyards in the afternoon heat, and share these moments with fellow riders.”

Hotel & Evening: Luxury at Domaine de Barive

By mid-afternoon, our route brought us into Sainte-Preuve. Nestled in a lush green valley, Domaine de Barive welcomed us with its imposing iron gates and elegant historic manor house. Turning off the tarmac into the quiet gravel driveway, we parked the motorcycles in a neat row in front of the stone courtyard.

There is a special satisfaction in arriving at a luxury hotel after a full day riding. We shed leather jackets, unbuckled riding boots, and carried our inner panniers up to our rooms. Domaine de Barive features beautifully appointed suites, manicured grounds, a serene indoor pool, and an exceptional restaurant.

After a dip in the pool, the group gathered on the terrace. With glasses of local Champagne and French beers, we toasted to Day 14 and the journey shared. Dinner was a culinary highlight: local duck breast, artisan cheeses, and fine wines, accompanied by non-stop laughter as we recounted tour stories.

Tomorrow: The Final Leg Home

Tomorrow marks Day 15—the final chapter of our ‘Twisties & The Tuscan Sun’ tour. From Domaine de Barive, we make our final push north toward Calais, where the Eurotunnel shuttle will carry us back to Folkestone.

Over 15 days, we will have covered nearly 2,500 miles across four countries, conquered iconic mountain passes, explored ancient Italian cities, and built lifelong friendships. Tonight, we rest deeply in Sainte-Preuve, ready for one last glorious ride tomorrow.
