Introduction: From Alpine Waters to Culinary Heartland
Waking up on the northern edge of Lake Garda in Torbole is an sensory experience like no other on our Twisties & The Tuscan Sun itinerary. You step out onto the balcony, breathe in the crisp mountain-infused lake air, and gaze up at colossal limestone cliffs that plunge dramatically into deep, cobalt-blue waters. Yesterday had been all about high mountain passes and sharp Alpine hairpins; today marked our transition into the heart of northern Italy, swapping high-altitude chill for golden Italian sunshine and the vibrant culture of Emilia-Romagna.
By 8:30am, the morning sun was already casting a brilliant glare across the lake, warming the tarmac and promises of a sensational day on two wheels. As tour leader, mornings like this fill me with sheer pride. The group gathered beside the bikes parked near the water’s edge, sipping dark Italian espressos and chatting excitedly about the road ahead. Our plan for Day 6 was a sublime blend of leisurely lakeside riding along Garda’s eastern shoreline, a classic gelato stop in the medieval town of Lazise, and a warm afternoon sweep south across the fertile plains into historic Bologna—the culinary capital of Italy.
There is a special rhythm to a multi-week European tour. By Day 6, everyone is completely in tune with their machines, confidence is soaring, and the group operates as a seamless unit. We finished our last drops of espresso, zipped up our summer mesh jackets, started the engines, and rolled out along the magnificent Gardesana Orientale.
Today’s Route
Day 6 took us on a scenic south-bound trajectory through northern Italy, connecting the spectacular Alpine foothills of Trentino-Alto Adige with the historic heart of Emilia-Romagna. Leaving Torbole at the tip of Lake Garda, our route hugged the eastern shoreline along the legendary SS249 Gardesana Orientale, passing through picturesque coastal villages like Malcesine and Torri del Benaco before arriving at the medieval walled gem of Lazise for lunch.
Today’s Route Overview
Start: Torbole (Lake Garda), Italy | Finish: Bologna, Italy
Routing: Gardesana Orientale (SS249) Lakeside Highway → Malcesine & Torri del Benaco → Lazise Midday Pause → Po Valley Crossing → Bologna
Distance: ~120 Miles | Country Passed: Italy
After refuelling with artisanal gelato in Lazise, we turned inland away from the lake, leaving the Veneto region behind as we headed south across the Po Valley. Passing through gently rolling agricultural landscapes and historic towns, we entered Emilia-Romagna, navigating smoothly into Bologna as the afternoon warmth peaked in the mid-thirties.
The Ride: Lake Garda Tarmac, Midday Gelato, and the Heat of Bologna
Riding out of Torbole in the morning light is pure bliss. The road carves directly between towering vertical rock faces on your left and the vast expanse of Lake Garda on your right. Tunnels carved through solid rock offer brief flashes of shade before spitting you out into blinding sunlight with panoramic lake views. Windsurfers were already dotting the northern waters, catching the famous Ora wind blowing up the valley.
We maintained a relaxed, rhythmic pace down the eastern shoreline. The road twists gently following the natural contours of the coastline, offering flowing bends and constant glimpses of olive groves, cypress trees, and ancient stone harbour walls. Passing through Malcesine, the imposing Scaliger Castle stood guard above the water, framed perfectly against the clear blue sky.
By midday, as the Italian sun reached its height, we rolled into Lazise on Garda’s south-eastern shore. Enclosed by massive 14th-century Scaliger walls, Lazise is a picture-postcard town boasting narrow paved alleys, a picturesque medieval harbour, and vibrant cafes along its waterfront promenade. We parked the machines securely near the ancient town gates and headed straight into the pedestrian historic centre.
No Italian motorcycle tour is complete without proper gelato, and Lazise delivers some of the best in the region. We grabbed generous cones of pistacchio, nocciola, and stracciatella, strolling along the harbour wall and watching wooden boats bobbing gently in the water. Sitting together in the shade of palms while savoring ice-cold gelato was the quintessential midday pause—pure Italian la dolce vita on two wheels.
Leaving Lazise in the early afternoon, we set our sights south toward Bologna. As we departed the lake, the topography flattened out into the expansive Po Valley. The temperature climbed rapidly, hitting 35°C (95°F) as the afternoon Italian heat took hold. Opening visor vents and letting the warm breeze flow through mesh summer jackets, we maintained a steady highway pace across the region, watching distant mountain silhouettes appear on the southern horizon—the Apennines, waiting for us tomorrow!
By late afternoon around 4:57pm, we navigated the outer rings of Bologna and pulled into our comfortable hotel. Radiating heat off the tarmac, the bikes were parked in the hotel garage, helmets were unbuckled, and a unanimous sigh of relief went round as everyone cooled off after a hot, glorious riding stint.
Rider Experiences & Group Camaraderie
Today showcased the incredible diversity of European motorcycle touring. Moving from the cool breeze of mountain lake shores into the vibrant heat of central Italy gave everyone a real sense of journey and accomplishment. During our gelato break in Lazise, the banter across the table was brilliant. Riders were comparing notes on cornering lines along the lake road, admiring the effortless performance of their machines, and soaking in the relaxed Italian lifestyle.
Riding in a group in hot weather requires discipline and clear communication, and our team performed faultlessly. Regular hydration stops, supportive riding formations, and shared enthusiasm kept spirits soaring high all day. Standing outside the hotel in Bologna, despite the heat, smiles were everywhere. There is a deep, bond that forms when you conquer miles together, and this group is having the absolute time of their lives.
Hotel & Evening in Culinary Bologna
After shedding hot riding suits and taking long, refreshing showers, the entire group met in the hotel lobby ready to explore Bologna. Known as La Grassa (The Fat One) for its unmatched culinary heritage, Bologna is a city defined by miles of medieval porticoes, terracotta rooftops, and warm, welcoming trattorias.
We took a leisurely evening stroll beneath the shaded arcades toward the historic center. The air cooled nicely as dusk fell, creating a perfect atmosphere for an outdoor feast. We bagged a long wooden table at a traditional local trattoria, starting with platters of silky Prosciutto di Parma, Mortadella, and aged Parmigiano-Reggiano paired with sparkling local Lambrusco. For the main course, authentic Tagliatelle al Ragù Bolognese was served—rich, savory, and cooked to perfection. Laughter, toasted glasses, and storytelling echoed around the table late into the night.
Tomorrow: Crossing the Apennines into Tuscany
Tomorrow on Day 7, we tackle one of the absolute highlights of the entire 15-day tour: crossing the rugged Apennine mountain range into Tuscany! Leaving Bologna, we will climb through the legendary mountain passes—including the famous Passo della Futa and Passo della Raticosa—where Ducati test riders push their machines to the limit. From there, we descend into the iconic rolling hills, cypress-lined avenues, and vineyards of Tuscany. The twisties are calling, so stay tuned for Day 7 of Notes From The Road!
